How the Progressive Overload Calculator Works

The calculator looks at your recent performance and gives a simple next target. Depending on your result, it may suggest adding reps, increasing weight, repeating the same target, or choosing a more appropriate progression.

Progressive Overload Examples

These examples follow the same calculator behavior used above.

If you lifted 135 lb for 6 reps, the calculator suggests staying at 135 lb and aiming for 7 reps next.
If you lifted 135 lb for 8 reps, it suggests moving to 140 lb and rebuilding from 5 reps.
If performance has dropped across recent sessions, it can suggest a small load reduction so you can rebuild clean reps.

Progressive overload without spreadsheets

This calculator is useful for one lift. Bazu does this automatically across your workouts by tracking your history, PRs, and next targets while you train.

FAQ

What is progressive overload?

Progressive overload means gradually increasing training demand over time. For lifting, that usually means adding reps, adding weight, adding sets, improving control, or increasing exercise difficulty.

When should I add weight?

In general, lifters add weight when they can complete the top end of their target range with clean reps. This calculator gives a simple target based on the information entered.

Should I add reps or weight first?

Many lifters progress by adding reps first, then increasing weight once they reach the top of their target range. Bazu helps automate this decision inside your workouts.

Is this the same as Bazu's in-app Progressive Overload?

This tool is a simple standalone calculator. The Bazu app uses your workout history to show progressive overload targets directly while you train.

Does this work for beginners?

Yes. The calculator is designed to give simple next-step guidance without requiring spreadsheets or complex programming knowledge.
